Pie great’s true legacy
THIRTY years after his father Gavin played his first game for Collingwood, Callum Brown will make his debut in the black and white in front of what is expected to be a bumper Queen’s Birthday crowd at the MCG on Monday.
The 19-year-old – who was a father-son selection at pick 35 in last year’s draft – was told during a team meeting yesterday that he would be picked to debut against Melbourne.
Collingwood coach Nathan Buckley said there was a “fair bit of romanticism” around Brown, being the son of a 254game premiership player, but the teenager had earnt his spot.
“He gets his chance and we know that we’re not going to lack in endeavour or grunt from him and he’s got a fair bit of class to go with that,” Buckley said.
“We broke protocol a little bit (yesterday) by letting him know in front of the boys. He didn’t know it was happening so he was pretty shocked.”
