Top teams mirror the records of each other

- TERRY WILSON

LOCAL chief Damien Bresic has been involved in the Gold Coast soccer scene for 35 years and cannot remember anything like a situation that exists at the moment.

After a stunning 1-0 loss by ladder leaders Surfers Paradise against Burleigh Heads, and wins by Gold Coast Knights and Broadbeach United, absolutely nothing separates the top two sides in the Gold Coast Premier League.

Surfers and the Knights are on 30 points and have scored 37 goals each and conceded 14 each.

“As a player and official for 35 years I can’t remember it ever being like this,” said Bresic, the Football Gold Coast general manager.

“Goals for, goals against, games played, the whole box and dice is the same.”

What makes it even more interesting is that Broadbeach have 27 points and are lurking ready to pounce if the two top sides fall over.

“That’s another one,” Bresic said. “I don’t remember having three teams so close together at the halfway mark of a season.”

A neat goal from Hayden Sumner following a one-two move set up Burleigh’s surprise win with the only goal against Surfers at Pizzey Park.

While the Apollo were being brought back to earth, the Knights put five on Murwillumbah at the latter’s Jim Devine Field.

Teddy Watson and Andrew Barisic, two key off-season signings, both scored twice.

At Duncan McKenna Field, Broadbeach beat Palm Beach 4-0 after a scoreless first half. The game opened up after the Sharks’ Ryan Litchfield was sent off for a second yellow card.

Coomera scored twice in the final 10 minutes to upset Magic United 3-2 on Friday.
