COUNCIL GOES INTO BATTLE FOR KOALAS

- LEA EMERY

FLUFFY little Targaryen will not have to rely on a Games of Thrones-style battle to save his home thanks to the Gold Coast City Council’s new Koala Conservation Plan.

The council yesterday made the call for more feedback to help save koalas like Targaryen, named by staff at Currumbin Wildlife Hospital after one of the families from Game of Thrones.

Burleigh councillor Pauline Young said almost 900 people had already provided their feedback on the plan which proposed 61 conservation actions to help koalas.

“The main concern is the loss of natural habitat which we are addressing across the city,” she said.

The actions also include urging residents to control pets, providing more koala crossings and managing threat from bushfire.

Cr Young said about 1000 trees had been planted in Burleigh to help koalas.

Currumbin Wildlife Hospital treated a record breaking 418 koalas last year.

Senior vet Michael Pyne said while habitat was a great concern, about 60 per cent of their hospital admissions were due to diseases a koala had contracted in the wild.

Feedback on the plan will remain open until June 26 at gchaveyoursay.com.au
