BATTLE OF THE BANDS

- ALEXA RIPSHER

Young musicians have a golden opportunity to showcase their talents when the Battle of the Bands swings into action this week COOMERA Anglican College students will take centre stage at the Battle of the Bands competition returning to TAFE Queensland Gold Coast’s Coomera campus this Thursday.

This is one of the most exciting live performance opportunities for young musicians in secondary schools across this region.

Battle of the Bands will see

12 bands from eight schools showcasing their talents in a range of musical styles including rock, acoustic, pop, reggae, funk and grunge.

Coomera Anglican College Battle of the Bands event coordinator Lynne Tarlinton said the event was an exciting live performance opportunity for young musicians.

“Battle of the Bands provides aspiring musicians with an opportunity to gain confidence and exposure though live performance, as well as valuable insights and career pathways into the music industry,” Ms Tarlinton said.

“Participants are given a fabulous chance to perform in TAFE’s $26 million state ofthe-art facilities and participate in workshops leading up to the Battle.

“They then receive feedback on their performance from professional musicians and industry representatives on our judging panel.

“With each year, we are seeing more and more bands performing an original piece which is a great chance to showcase young songwriters.

“It’s great to see all the students from both Gold Coast and Brisbane schools celebrate their talents and express themselves creatively in a safe and encouraging place.”

Bands are required to have a minimum of three and maximum of 10 band members.

Each band performs two songs on the night, either covers or originals and it is a great opportunity for musicians and songwriters to perform their original pieces.

I have competed in the Battle of the Bands previously in two different groups — Highly Flammable and Falling Debris — and was amazed by the level of talent that is on the Gold Coast. Being able to sound off ideas and work with other musicians helps broaden students’ musical experience.

Battle of the Bands is an amazing opportunity to perform in TAFE’s professional facilities and gain advice from the judges who are all industry professionals.

This helps us as musicians further grow and enhance our performance skills.

Members of the public are invited to attend the Battle of the Bands at the TAFE Gold Coast Coomera Campus with tickets available on the evening for $10 per person. AS part of the 2018 Commonwealth Games on the Gold Coast, Robina State School submitted a nominee for the Queen’s Baton Relay.

Nadia Windleborn (pictured) was Robina’s nominee awaiting selection by the GC2018 committee.

Another student, Grace Hollonds, has also been submitted by her Burleigh Heads Scout troop.

Robina State School has decided to hold a celebration assembly in early July to celebrate the contribution these students make to our school community.

They are students who excel in sport, academic learning and the arts.

They are community minded people supporting school playtime programs such as the coding club, band, choir, sport and science extension activities.

Honoured by our community, the students will receive a certificate depicting Games images.

Student Jessica Cassar said the Robina school was also connecting with its “adopted school” in the Cayman Islands.

“The Cayman Island International School covers prep to high school with over 30 languages spoken,” Jessica said.

“The Cayman Islands is a group of three Islands located in the northern hemisphere, south of Cuba and northwest of Jamaica surrounded by the Caribbean Sea.

“Surrounded by water, just like Australia, the islands are biodiverse meaning, like Australia they have unique animals. The Cayman are home to the blue iguana and the red-footed booby.”
