ARTIST RE-COLOURING TWEED WORLD 23 YEARS ON

- MEGAN BIROT megan.birot@news.com.au

IAN Tremewen is putting colour back into an iconic Twin Towns mural – 23 years after designing and painting it.

The Bilambil Heights artist was enlisted in 1994 by former Twin Towns general manager Russell Roylance to bring the wall to life.

Mr Tremewen also gave the Tweed mural a contemporary retouch in 2006.

He said he was surprised his public artwork had become an icon of the border.

“To be honest, I thought they would paint over it slowly over the years.

“What’s funny is that when I did the first mural, I thought ‘OK, cool I did a mural for the club’, but it’s really become an icon of the Tweed and Gold Coast.

“It’s the first thing you see when you leave Queensland and enter New South Wales.”

Mr Tremewen said repainting the mural – which features colours typical of the Tweed and Gold Coast rainforests inspired by red gums and bangalow palms – would take five weeks.

“It’s 30 metres of colours and abstraction and you know what they say, you don’t rush art,” he said.

“For an artist to get this opportunity to re-touch your work is incredible.”
