HOW much more of the Gold Coast is going to be ruined by the unappealing projects promoted by Mayor Tom Tate and his council and developer mates?

There is already a concrete forest of highrise towers planned for Surfers Paradise – why then do we need ASF’s and Sunland’s proposed oversized blocks, to say nothing of the ASF casino?

Likewise we don’t need a tower at Mermaid Beach; Sunland’s exaggerated statement that the project would complement the “outdistancing beachside location” is a ludicrous misuse of the English language and just plain wrong.

A protruding “sore toe” is a more truthful description.

The proposed cruise ship terminal would be equally detrimental, and a disaster for The Spit; the required “big ship infrastructure” would ruin Phillip Park and surrounding areas.

We need this natural area to remain low-key and accessible to all. The area does not have a proper harbour, yet CST promoters still want to include the possibility of making it a home port, with provision for refuelling and passenger disembarking facilities.

Meanwhile there has been a deafening silence about the solution to excess traffic.

A final disaster would be the damage to the present Burleigh Heads surfside shopping village once the light rail extension sends buses lumbering along the side streets there.

How many businesses will be harmed by all this? So much for the job creation we keep hearing about.

Lack of openness has characterised the above proposals.

Not surprisingly, the promotional sketches of the light rail stop show the side streets looking wider than they are. And how many of those attractive street trees will be axed to make more room?

Ratepayers and residents deserve better than this. DOROTHY LLOYD, GOLD COAST I HAVE just completed the free bowel screening test.

This is a marvellous service which saves many lives by detecting cancer in the early stages, before symptoms arise.

The information contained within is easy to understand and informative. At the back of the booklet there is a form to opt out. Surely after reading all the information no one would opt out.

My point is, why don’t we have to “opt out” of other things? Being a donor for example?

If an informative booklet was sent to everyone, it would help save many lives.

It would be a good reference and a helpful and healthy conversation starter within families.

RE The article on female bullfighter in Spain (GCB, 13/6), it seems amazing in this day and age, such animal cruelty is not only condoned but actually celebrated.

I realise there is much animal cruelty in the world but bullfighting is so “in your face” and barbaric.

Yes, it’s been going on for centuries – but that really doesn’t for one minute mean it is acceptable in the 21st century.
