CLASSICS ARE BACK IN TOWN FOR MOTOSOCIAL

- MEGAN BIROT

CUSTOM motorbike enthusiast Tom Gilroy is revved-up about bringing classics back to the Glitter Strip.

The Purpose Built Moto owner has loved classic twowheelers since laying eyes on his old boss’s ’60s Triumph 12 years ago. Mr Gilroy, 26, is now ready to showcase his own two-wheeled work of art at the inaugural Motosocial Show’n’Shine on Sunday.

He said the event was a resurgence of classic motorcycles on the Gold Coast.

“In the ’70s and ’80s the Gold Coast was buzzing with two-wheelers and people are rediscovering that era by buying old bikes and fixing them up themselves,” Mr Gilroy said.

“There’s a rawness about classic bikes. They have a history and a depth of character.

“We want to put a good spin on motorcyclists and shed the stereotypical bikie image.” Cafe racers, scramblers and bobbers, including a 1992 Honda CB750 RC42 and a 1981 Suzuki GS550, will be showcased at the Show’n’Shine at Sandbar Surfers Paradise.

Sunday’s Motosocial starts with a group ride at 10am from Currumbin to Surfers Paradise.
