London fire death toll expected to rise

At least 12 people have died after a fire ripped through a 24-storey apartment tower in west London on Wednesday. At least 74 people were injured and scores more are feared dead as families on the upper floors of the Grenfell Tower were trapped, forcing some of the victims to leap out of windows.

A Gold Coast mother-of-two has been charged over the death of her younger sister in a smash at Palm Beach. Candice Chmieluk, 30 of Worongary, was allegedly driving her black Jeep when it smashed into a traffic light pole on Thrower Drive at Palm Beach in May 2016. The impact killed her passenger, her sister SammyJo, 24, who was trapped inside the burning wreck.

Marriage proposal strikes out badly

A would-be marriage proposal went pear-shaped at a baseball game in the US on Monday night. The whole stadium got involved in the suitor’s attempt to impress his girlfriend during a Columbia Fireflies game. The Single-A grounds crew performed a dance to Bruno Mars’ Marry You while fans sang along. That’s when the fairytale scene turned ugly. The man dropped to one knee and extended the ring as the woman, looking dazed, gradually started shaking her head. Pushing the ring closer to her only confirmed her rejection. She then bent down to whisper something in his ear before snatching her purse and leaving the scene.
