Kyrgios says he is free of hurt

- LEO SCHLINK

FREE of mental and physical anguish for the first time in months, Nick Kyrgios believes he has regained complete fitness ahead a defining grasscourt season.

Declaring himself over hip and shoulder niggles, the firebrand Australian tennis player will tackle the AEGON Championships at Queen’s Club determined to leave a positive impression ahead of Wimbledon next month.

“My body is in way better nick,” Kyrgios said ahead of a first-round clash with American Donald Young.

“I was having hip pain for the last seven months. I think I’ve done everything now. I’ve been rehabbing every day.”

Kyrgios bowed out of the French Open in the second round to Kevin Anderson despite controlling the first two sets.

Troubled by soreness in his left hip and right shoulder, Kyrgios has thrived since having injections in both joints,

“(I’m) in really good shape now, I got an injection into my hip and in my shoulder,” he said.

“I’ve been doing a lot of rehabbing. Had a good week of rehab after the French.

“I’m able to move without any pain in my hip and it’s been a while since I’ve been like that.

“So pretty happy with that. “Coming on the grass kind of refreshes you a little bit, a whole new scene and really good.

“The injection really settled everything down in my hip. I feel good.

“I’ve been practising two hours a day and I’ve been moving well. I’m feeling good physically.”

Kyrgios twice beat then world No.2 Novak Djokovic and lost an epic clash to Roger Federer on the autumn hardcourt swing before injury and off-court issues halted his advance.

The death of his grandfather Christos devastated Kyrgios, draining him of motivation to travel or practise.

“It was tough after my grandfather passed away,” he said.

“The month afterwards I didn’t really want to do anything and the last thing I wanted to do was travel to Madrid and play a tournament.”
