Swallow says no room for error in finals fight

- TOM BOSWELL

MIDFIELDER David Swallow says the Suns face suddendeath football for the remainder of the season to keep any hopes of finals football alive.

Swallow said Gold Coast had lost any room for error on the back of a disappointing 10point loss to Carlton in one of the club’s most significant games of the season. It has left the Suns with a 5-7 record with 10 games left.

“That was a fairly important game for us,” Swallow said of Saturday’s Round 13 loss at Metricon Stadium.

“That’s why it’s so disappointing, especially given the significance of it. To dish up that is really disappointing. We have to be looking to win each week now. Every game you drop the harder it gets.

“It’s disappointing but we will go again next week.”

Swallow was among Gold Coast’s best with 18 disposals, seven tackles and a goal in a game where, bar a brief period in the third quarter, the Suns were smashed at the contest and lacked any genuine urgency to defend.

“It was disappointing the way we started,” Swallow said.

“They smacked us around the contest and you get what you deserve in footy. We fought our way back into it and showed a bit of toughness and got ourselves in to the lead.

“The disappointing thing is the game was in the balance and we couldn’t get it done in the end.”

For all of Carlton’s dominance it was their wayward kicking that enabled the Suns to still be within 24 points at half-time. The Blues kicked 6.8 in the first two terms to give the Suns a sniff.
