Rivals pay tough Bears ultimate compliment

- CONNOR O’BRIEN

SOUTHPORT coach Tim Cannard has paid Gold Coast Rugby League leaders Burleigh the ultimate compliment.

The Bears yesterday accounted for the Tigers 34-16 at Pizzey Park in a game where a home-side try scored shortly before half-time proved signifi- cant. The result means Burleigh are now unbeaten from nine starts and Cannard admitted he could see them carrying that perfect record through the entire season.

“Yeah I probably could,” he said. “I think it will come down to Tugun and Burleigh again … but they are beatable.

“(Burleigh) are very similar to like a Melbourne Storm, very well structured. They are predictable but in saying that, what they do, they do very, very well.”

After making finals last year, Southport have dropped to seventh this season.

“We are struggling to be honest,” Cannard said.

“We have got no depth at the club. It’s been a very, very tough year so far.”

Burleigh boasted six different tryscorers yesterday while Lamonz Williams nabbed a double for Southport.

In other games, Currumbin defeated Ormeau 51-14, Runaway Bay pipped Bilambil 25-18 and Tugun toppled Tweed Heads 16-8.
