Bears pip Seahawks to stay unbeaten

- CONNOR O’BRIEN

TUGUN’S Martin Griese has joined the list of leading Gold Coast Rugby League coaches calling for a better standard of refereeing after his side were “crucified” yesterday.

The Seahawks mentor was frustrated after being on the wrong end of a whopping penalty count in their tense 12-10 loss to unbeaten Burleigh at Boyd St.

The Bears only edged ahead on the cusp of full-time when Keanu Te Kiri – playing against his old teammates including brother Grayson – kicked the decisive penalty goal.

I’M PRETTY SURE BURLEIGH KNOW THAT THEY HAVE GOT A PROBLEM NEXT TIME THEY PLAY US ... MARTIN GRIESE

“The refereeing was just not at the level that the league needs it to be at,” Griese said.

“The league is trying to promote us to be a better category than the regular one but he (the referee) wouldn’t have even reffed 19s the way he carried on.

“There was probably 15 or 20 penalties difference, yeah we just got crucified. It was that bad. There was some (that were warranted) but it gets to the point where we’re just not that bad of a team.”

Griese was happy overall with his side’s display and is sure the Bears can be toppled.

“The boys know they are beatable and I’m pretty sure Burleigh know that they have got a problem next time they play us,” he said.

On the representative football front, the Queensland Rangers fell 30-14 to the NSW Ron Massey Cup team at Pizzey Park.

Matthew Duggan, James Sharkie and Ono So’oialo were the Rangers’ tryscorers. It was Queensland’s first loss since 2014.
