Slain enforcer ‘not a good guy’

The heavily tattooed man shot in a Tweed Heads industrial area was well known in criminal circles as a debt enforcer. Ace John Anthony Hall, 31, was shot once in the stomach and taken to Tweed Hospital about 4.30pm in a car by his girlfriend and another man at about 4.30pm on Saturday. He died during surgery. Sources said Mr Hall was “not a good guy” and known in the drug scene as being an “enforcer”.

One of Surfers Paradise’s standout cafes and bars is closing so the owner can spend more time with her children. Tiparpha “Tammy” McVicar held a final drinks party at Black Coffee Lyrics on Sunday, more than a year after buying the venue. Mrs McVicar, 31, said managing the busy cafe with a six-year-old, 20-month-old and newborn girl Emily had became too much.

‘Otto got exactly what he deserved’

A University of Delaware professor in the US is under fire for saying the college student who died after being held prisoner in North Korea “got exactly what he deserved”. Calls are mounting for anthropolo­gy professor Kathy Dettwyler to be fired after she reportedly wrote on her Facebook page that Otto Warmbier was “typical of a mindset of a lot of the young, white, rich, clueless males who come into my classes”.

Man on weapons and drug charges

A man was due to front a Gold Coast court on Monday after police found him with a loaded gun, drugs and a large amount of money. Gold Coast Rapid Action and Patrols (RAP) officers charged the 44-year-old man with drugs and weapons offences following the search of a vehicle at Biggera Waters in the early hours of Sunday morning.
