Suspect hammy to put Hanley on sideline

- ANDREW HAMILTON

SUN Pearce Hanley will miss at least a week after a tough weekend for Queensland’s two AFL teams.

As well as the Suns losing Hanley, the Brisbane Lions are likely to be without skipper Dayne Beams for up to a month because of a shoulder injury.

Hanley will have scans today on his tight hamstring and although the suspicion is he has neural pain and not a tendon tear, the Suns are resigned to losing him for the match against the Kangaroos.

Queensland’s two clubs showed some fight against their top-eight opponents but they did so without much help from their biggest names.

Dayne Zorko and Daniel Rich had dirty nights in the Lions’ 10-goal loss to GWS while Suns skipper Tom Lynch is now officially in the first major form slump of his career after being kept goalless for the second week in a row.

Co-captain Steven May is also far from his best form.

The Suns must beat the Kangaroos on Saturday to keep any slim finals hopes alive and Suns football manager Marcus Ashcroft expects they will have to do it without Hanley.

“The things that are working against him are the six-day turnaround and the flight,’’ he said. “He didn’t have an episode, he just got tight and we erred on the side of caution and took him off.

“We have to assess the scan tomorrow but I would think it was unlikely he could play.”

Beams had scans yesterday that revealed he had strained his AC joint. Brisbane football manager David Noble said the fact the skipper did not require surgery and would play again this year was a positive.
