Daley guarantees Hayne will be picked again

- DEAN RITCHIE

NSW coach Laurie Daley has guaranteed Gold Coast Titan Jarryd Hayne his position in NSW’s Origin III side, saying the enigmatic star is ready to atone for mistakes that hurt the Blues in Sydney.

The under-fire Blues centre has taken his forgettable Origin II “personally”.

Hayne will be named in the NSW side next Monday when Daley is unlikely to make any changes unless forced to by injuries.

Daley never harboured thoughts of dumping the Titans star after NSW lost Game Two 18-16 last week.

“Jarryd is a proven worldclass player,” Daley said.

“When guys like Jarryd don’t play to the standards they set themselves, they take it personally.

“Yes, he was disappointed with his performance. I am certain he will bounce back. I just know he will.

“I’ve got no dramas with him. He will, like all good players, respond. I’d like to back him next start.’’

Pressed on any changes, Daley said: “Let’s just wait and see what happens. You never say never.

“Unless there are injuries, I can’t see there being any changes. Maybe one. They all went back and played well for their clubs on the weekend.”

Daley has dissected the loss with Blues assistant coach John Cartwright.

He has watched the match about four times. “We had a 20-minute period when we weren’t at our best and that’s where we lost it,’’ Daley said.

“But that’s easily fixed. And we can certainly do that. We had a bad patch and were made to pay.”

NSW will announce their side on Monday morning. The team will fly to Kingscliff later that afternoon.
