Mum’s earbashing gets Hurrell’s mind on job

- EMMA GREENWOOD

FORGET Neil Henry, it was Konrad Hurrell’s mum that gave him the biggest earbashing after the hulking centre’s dummy spit against Souths.

Henry “had a word” to Hurrell, telling him to address his discipline after the international exploded at referee Ashley Klein in the Round 15 match, giving away a penalty, before charging off his flank the following set as the titans conceded a try that turned the game.

Henry’s ire was one thing. The real penalty came when Hurrell called his mother Fatafehi, after the match, who was “not at all” happy with her son.

“Mum wasn’t too happy about the anger the other week but I guess that’s part of the game and I’ll work on it during the week and try and stay calm a bit more,” Hurrell said.

“She was (worse than Henry). Neil was more professional. Mum was a bit more family, over the top, growling.

“I gave her a call and said: ‘Hi, how are you’ and she was straight into it.

“‘What happened to you? Your face wasn’t that nice’.

“So I learned from it and I’ve just go to move on.”

Hurrell made up for it by scoring two tries in the Titans’ crucial win against the Wests Tigers on Friday night, blowing his trademark kiss to his mum.

“I think she hasn’t had (a kiss from me) for a while so it was good to get it back out there.”

Hurrell is one of the Titans – and the NRL’s – most popular players, in large part because of the energy and emotion he plays with.

The 25-year-old wears his heart on his sleeve and could never be accused of giving less than his best for his team.

“Playing alongside these boys is a dream come true and I don’t take any opportunity for granted,” said Hurrell, who was snapped up by the Gold Coast midway through last season after falling out of favour at the Warriors.

Hurrell is determined to bring his best again on Friday night when the Titans take on the Dragons at Robina.
