A FLYING WHALE? IT’S NO FLUKE

- Miles backs nets again, P17

THIS mighty mammal is having a whale of a time as it makes the journey north this winter.

Making a splash off the Gold Coast yesterday morning – 8km off the Seaway – it is among the thousands of humpbacks that will migrate through Queensland waters.

“They increase by about 10 per cent every year and there could be between 25,000 and 30,000 this year passing by,” general manager of Sea World Whale Watch David Robertson said. “It’s one of the great marine mammal migrations in the world and it’s right on our doorstep.”

He said the animals make a massive splash when they hit the ocean. “It’s a huge display of nature’s power.”
