PHIL’S PANCAKE PARADISE FOR SURFERS NIPPERS

- NICHOLAS MCELROY nicholas.mcelroy@news.com.au

NIPPERS across the Gold Coast be on watch.

Surfers Paradise SLSC has called in a big gun junior lifesaver coach – and he’s not afraid to feed the kids pancakes.

Former Australian Youth Development head coach and 2000 world ironman, taplin relay and board rescue champion Phil Clayton has been called in by lifesaving great Trevor Hendy to be the club’s new junior coach.

Clayton’s first sessions with the club since 2005 started this week with a school holiday program and will end tomorrow with a pancake-eating competition.

“The clinics have been really well received,” the 41year-old father- of-two said. “There are plenty of new faces taking part in the week.

“It will end with all-you-can-eat pancakes. After a week of hard training they should have a few hours worth of eating pancakes in them.”

Clayton, who has coached in most Australian states and New Zealand over 15 years, said his focus would be on surf skills and more structured training sessions.

“First and foremost I want kids to be able to read (surf) conditions,” he said.

“And second, I want the club to become a competitive force in the movement.”
