Ruth faces more tests

MAYORESS Ruth Tate will remain in Singapore until at least Monday to undergo testing as a part of her recovery from a serious heart attack.

Mrs Tate was rushed to hospital last week after collapsing minutes before she and husband, Gold Coast Mayor Tom Tate, were to board a flight at Singapore’s Changi Airport.

The mayoress is expected to remain in hospital over the weekend before undergoing the tests.

The pair hope to be back on the Gold Coast by Wednesday.

Cr Tate, who gave first aid to his wife, yesterday urged people to learn CPR.

“I did the full first aid course including CPR earlier this year in the office and I never expected to have to apply that training as I did so soon afterwards,” Cr Tate wrote on Facebook.

“I can only say you simply never know when that skill will be required to save someone’s life, particularly a loved one.”

Deputy Mayor Donna Gates has been acting as mayor while Cr Tate has been out of the city and will remain in place until she goes on annual leave on Saturday.

Surfers Paradise councillor Gary Baildon will become acting mayor until Cr Tate returns. Cr Baildon was chosen as he has the disaster management training required.

Cr and Mrs Tate received an influx of messages of support and get-well wishes via social media after the news broke.

“Ruth and I just wanted to say thank you to everyone for all your warm wishes, thoughts and prayers,” he wrote on Facebook.

“Ruth is doing better and better every day and for that we are truly blessed.”

The Tates were on their way to Rome to board a cruise when Mrs Tate collapsed.
