IN his recent address to the IPA, Tony Abbott said “Australia plainly, is not working as it should” and “we are letting ourselves down”.
I couldn’t agree more with the former PM, however, not for the reasons he expressed.
This government’s extremist right wing policies are harming this country economically and socially, transferring wealth from everyday Australians to wealthy individuals and foreign multinationals.
Under the Abbott/Turnbull government, wages have stagnated and even fallen due to the cut to penalty rates.
Many experts now predict our economy will go into a severe recession as the everyday person
struggles with rising living costs.
Australia must break away from this anti-people, anti-tax for foreign corporation’s policies because it is not a fair go for most of us. SHAUN NEWMAN
SURE boxer Jeff Horn has to do interviews for his upcoming title fight but I don’t know about going on Channel 10’s The Project for a second time and being called “Horn Dog” for the second time by some clown trying to be funny.
What a pity he did not practice a few overhand rights.

SAFETY outside schools has long been a serious issue and yet problems remain (“Police target school zones”, GCB, 29/6).
Many parents ignore traffic rules that apply in school zones and put children’s lives in danger.
Perhaps it’s time for governments to provide adequate drop-off and pick-up zones inside schools so such dangers are minimised.
Police numbers are not sufficient to assist in supervision at schools and so an effective strategy must be devised.

DURING the federal election campaign last year we saw Labor stoop to a new low and witnessed the most despicable scare campaign in Australia’s history.
The sick and elderly were targeted in a desperate, misleading attempt to secure votes.
At no stage was Medicare ever at risk of being privatised – and the Labor Party knew this.
Incredibly, despite widespread condemnation of their dirty tactics, they are at it again.
Fly-in, fly-out Labor Senator Murray Watt is targeting vulnerable Gold Coasters and spreading lies about Medicare.
The facts are in the Coalition’s recent Budget, we announced plans to guarantee Medicare and end Labor’s Medicare freeze. Senator Watt knows he’s spreading lies, and he doesn’t care.

YOU are correct GT (Chatroom, 28/6). Gonski funding is to do with more and better teachers, appropriate learning environments to be more efficient and perhaps increase union membership for those committed to a progressive society.
The NSW Teacher’s Federation is a long-standing institution that demonstrates great understanding and support for teachers, students, family and community.
