TRIATHLON Australia coach Dan Atkins says he can’t remember seeing Matt Hauser more focused.

Hauser will travel to Germany on July 11 where he will compete as part of a five-man Australian team in the Hamburg leg of the World Triathlon Series on July 15.

And a place in the team for next year’s Gold Coast Commonwealth Games will be up for grabs to an Australian competitor if they can finish in the top 10 after a 750m swim, 20km bike ride and 5km run.

Hauser burst on to the scene this year, finishing 18th in the Gold Coast leg of the World Triathlon Series on April 8 before winning the Chengdu World Cup on May 6.

He also featured in the new Super League series for the sport at Hamilton Island.

“Triathlon Australia have certainly invested their belief in him because of how he has raced,” said Atkins, who runs the national under-23 program on the Gold Coast.

“Especially in Chengdu where he won that World Cup and was one of the youngest ever. He has proven he is fantastic over the two-day format so the selectors believe he can put his hand up. That gives he and I enough confidence that he can go well.

“He is training really well and is really focused at the minute. He is probably the most focused that I have ever seen him.

“Before Gold Coast (WTS) he was a little bit stars in the sky and not really too fussed but you can see he is a bit more focused this time and starting to hit some great numbers in training which is really exciting. Come race day it’s just a matter of how he goes out there and applies himself.

“If he races anywhere near where he has been training then he will be competitive that is for sure.”
