Eagles up for fight over spot in finals

- CONNOR O’BRIEN

THEY were dominated yesterday but Ryan Gundry says his Currumbin side are up for the battle for the last Gold Coast Rugby League finals spot.

A clear top four has formed after 10 of 17 rounds: Burleigh, Runaway Bay, Tugun and Tweed Heads. Currumbin and Bilambil are locked on 18 points each in fifth.

“We’re conscious of it of course but we are just trying to get our own backyard in place,” Gundry said.

Missing nine regulars, including hooker Kelly Benson who is away with the Australian Universities team, the Eagles were beaten 50-10 by Runaway Bay.

“We fielded seven under-19s today which is a positive,” Gundry said.

The match was close until a 45-minute stoppage when a Seagulls player suffered a broken ankle.

At Brien Harris Oval in Ormeau, Bilambil defeated the Shearers 46-18.

The weekend had been a designated bye round for the competition, with the above two clashes held due to washouts in June.
