RETZLAFF’S MAJOR PLAY AT GOAL-KICKING CROWN

- TERRY WILSON

BIG Labrador forward and captain Bryce Retzlaff has soared to the top of the QAFL goalkicking list with another big haul against Broadbeach yesterday.

The former Brisbane Lions AFL player booted six in a commanding 14.19 (103) to 9.6 (60) win in the Coast derby at Ord Minnett Oval.

Retzlaff now has 28 goals in his past four games which included a haul of 11 against Sandgate in the fourth round of the competition.

“They were a bit more polished and executed better even though they kicked so many behinds,” Broadbeach football operations manager Jason Cotter said of the loss.

Broadbeach were only 15 points down at half-time but managed 2.2 to 7.4 after that.

A blow for the Tigers was the loss of promising Nabako Stow who sustained a dislocated shoulder in a crunching tackle.

Palm Beach-Currumbin lost for the second time this season when Morningside surprised them with an 11.10 (76) to 8.18 (66) win in the Lions den at Salk Oval.

And they had only themselves to blame, according to coach Chad Owens.

In the absence of regular spearhead Jarryd Douglas (hamstring) and lively flanker

Mitch Johnson (back to Southport) the Lions floundered in attack and really hurt themselves with inaccuracy from the boot.

“When you kick 8.18 you get what you deserve,” Owens said. “It was bad kicking to a degree but we really didn’t get it going, it was stop-start stuff from us.”

Somehow the Lions managed to turn a 16-point lead at three-quarter time into a 10-point loss with a final term of 1.4 as the rampant Panthers raced on 6.0.

Defender Liam McNeven and former NT Thunder ace Jake Dignan in the middle were standouts for the Lions.

At Sir Bruce Small Park, Surfers Paradise turned it on for an 18.14 (122) to 8.8 (56) win against bottom side Sandgate.

Thompson Smith was best afield for the Demons with his four goals, while Jack Taylor was also prominent.
