BYRON MAKES HIS MOVE — HE’S OFF TO BRAZIL

- MEGAN BIROT

GOLD Coast chess prodigy Byron Morris will represent Australia at the World Cadets Chess Championship in Brazil next month.

The Hillcrest Christian College Year 7 student is still pinching himself at the opportunity and is fine-tuning his tactics before making the long trip to South America.

“You’ve got to take your time and look for tactics to beat your opponent,” he said.

“I’m lucky sometimes too but the best part is meeting lots of people.

“I can’t believe I am going to Brazil to play chess.”

Byron, who started playing chess four years ago, will compete against young players from more than 100 countries for the chance to take the World Cadet Chess Champion title.

The budding chess player will get plenty of practise ahead of the world championships in the Junior Elite Training Squad where he’ll get coaching from top players in Canberra this week.
