Cyclist seriously hurt

A NSW cyclist suffered serious head and chest injuries after colliding with a car near Byron Bay yesterday afternoon.

The 71-year-old went into cardiac arrest following the collision and was flown by helicopter to Gold Coast University Hospital in a critical condition.

The accident happened on Old Bangalow Rd just before 1pm.

Westpac Rescue Helicopter media officer Roger Fry said the man was given several units of blood while on his way to hospital.
