Flaming engine forces plane to land

An AirAsia X flight bound for Malaysia has had to land in Brisbane after a suspected bird strike, with passengers saying they saw sparks coming from the engine. Flight D7207 took off from the Gold Coast, for Kuala Lumpur, at 10.20pm on Monday night but landed in Brisbane at 11.33pm following a mid-air emergency. The 345 passengers and 14 crew were uninjured.

‘My baby is going to die in front of me’

Karen Middleton was haunted by one terrifying thought when a group of alleged robbers held a gun to her teenage daughter’s head during a bungled home invasion. “I thought ‘that’s it, my baby is going to die in front of me’ – that’s all that was going on in my head,” the 44-year-old said. They were held at gunpoint after three men wearing balaclavas and armed with handguns and knives broke into their Mermaid Waters home at about 8.30am on Monday.

A Gold Coast surgeon is urging people to take nude selfies – but it’s for a sound medical reason. Plastic surgeon Dr Ian McDougall said taking a series of nude photograph­s of your own body could help in the early diagnosis of skin cancer. He said he believes the idea has saved the lives of several of his patients in recent years.
