Whack’em Coast hope

TRAINER Scott Morrisey says a drop in weight and a dry track could help Wack’em back to his winning ways today on the Gold Coast.

Wack’em will carry 55kg into today’s Sky Racing Handicap (1400m) with jockey James Orman in the saddle.

The four-year-old gelding finished four lengths behind winner Endless Days at the same distance at the Gold Coast on June 17 in heavy conditions and 59kg on the back.

The wet track and big weight is why Morrisey is confident the run was not a reflection of his current form that brought a win and second place finish in his two previous races before that.

Morrisey said Wack’em could win again today from barrier two.

“The combination of a heavy track and big weight got him last time,” Morrisey said.

“I’m glad they raced on the day but if they called them off it wouldn’t have surprised me.

“It was extremely wet and with that sort of weight it just didn’t go to plan. But we drop in weight now and the track won’t be as wet so I’m hoping for a good show.

“(The weight) will make a massive difference. He has drawn well but you still need 1 2 luck in racing – as you always do – but he is going very well and I’m happy with his work.

“I’d like to think if the race panned out his way he would be very competitive.

“All his other runs have been pretty good. He has had a pretty honest preparation when you go back through it.”

Morrisey was concerned how the last run would affect Wack’em’s recovery, especially after an abscess on his lung nearly killed him in 2015.

“He pulled up really good. It’s always a worry because of his history,” Morrisey said.

“But he actually pulled up good. He had no setbacks and never left any feed and his work has been good since.

“He feels good and looked beautiful before the last start in the enclosure.

“It’s just about keeping him happy. We try and keep him nice and fresh in between runs.” RYAMAR
