Woman attacked by ‘angry’ kangaroo

-

A WOMAN was rushed to hospital with “multiple injuries” after being attacked by a kangaroo at a Coombabah property yesterday.

Paramedics responded to reports a woman aged in her 50s had suffered scratches to her body.

“That’s what it looks like, she received scratches from an angry kangaroo,” a Queensland Ambulance Service spokeswoman said. “She received multiple injuries which appeared to be minor.”

The woman was taken to Gold Coast University Hospital in a stable condition.

At this stage it is unknown what happened prior to the attack or whether the marsupial was a wallaby or a kangaroo. It comes after two six foot kangaroos squared off against each other in the Currumbin Valley on Saturday – with a video of the stoush going viral.

Currumbin Wildlife Hospital vet Dr Michael Pyne said male kangaroos were generally responsible for striking out at people, especially if female roos were nearby. Dr Pyne added kangaroos – which he said could be found in suburban areas on the Gold Coast – generally did not have a specific mating season.

“Kangaroos will breed all year round,” he said, adding that he believed kangaroos attacked only when people stood up and faced them.
