Battery thieves put drivers at risk
TWEED motorists’ lives are being put on the line by brazen thieves who have once again stolen the battery from a set of temporary traffic lights.
The latest theft at Hogans Rd, Upper Duroby, comes less than a month after the Tweed Shire Council pleaded with thieves to stop after a spate of battery thefts left $10,000 out of pocket.
Thieves on Saturday night broke into the lights boxes and stole the back-up batteries.
Tweed Shire acting senior construction engineer Bob Hanby said it would take about a week to fix and a ‘give way’ sign had been placed at the end them section. “The only other alternative is to close the road at the landslip, forcing residents to make a long detour around,” he said. “Every time this happens motorists are placed at risk of meeting another vehicle headon on a one-way section.”
