- MAX SIMMS AND JACK THURTELL

The inquisitive members of the Aquinas College Coding Club have been busily exploring avenues of the rapidly evolving IT environment Year 7 Aquinas College

THE Aquinas College Coding Club has a new world open to it, thanks to virtual reality (VR) glasses.

Club members have used them to watch immersive videos on such fascinating

subjects as Star Wars and dinosaurs.

A highlight was riding a virtual rollercoaster. As the video began the screams and wows reflected how real the experience was right down to the feeling of stomachs churning. This was a theme park experience without leaving the school grounds.

Year 8 student Preston Davis said the VR headset was an “awesome experience”.

The Coding Club has also done activities such as Hour of Code, computer programming and Lego Mindstorms.

Skills students have learned include basic block coding, coding in JSS, JavaScript and html and using Lego Mindstorms.

Aquinas College network manager John Neumann said: “It is very encouraging to see students who are so excited about coding and the technology experience offered through this club. There are many roles in the IT industry for students with these skills.”

The club provides a sociable way to discover the exciting and ever-changing world of technology.

Overall the students at Coding Club really enjoyed the virtual reality experience, learning how to code in a number of languages and learning more about YouTube.

The members are very happy to recommend the club to all their fellow students at Aquinas College.
