XM2 HAS LIFT-OFF IN FILM WORLD’S GAME OF DRONES

- STEPHANIE BENNETT

AN AUSTRALIAN drone company is shaking up the movie-making industry, with XM2 hoping to showcase their new heavy-duty camera drone at the World of Drones Congress in Brisbane later this year.

The Melbourne-based company, which has an office on the Gold Coast, has been in constant demand since launching in 2013, with founder Stephen Oh using his experience as a television producer to cement its place in the growing drone market.

XM2 have developed drones which have been used to shoot major sequences in blockbuster films, including Aquaman on the Gold Coast.

At the World of Drones Congress to be held from August 31 to September 2 – and which will hold a preview event today – Mr Oh will present masterclasses on the industry. “Our presentations will be mainly education-focused, that’s the biggest hurdle we face on a daily basis,” Mr Oh said.

“People who are uncertain about how it works tend to get scared – the ones that get to know the technology get addicted.

“We’re hoping to do a global launch of our new drone which will have the capability of holding the biggest camera in the industry.”

Mr Oh said the company currently had three projects operating across the world – in Queensland, Thailand and the US – with 13 employees.
