LIFE GETS FITTER AT 40

- AMANDA ROBBEMOND

WOMEN are increasingly fit and fabulous in their forties.

A recent study by supplements company Ostelin found 35 per cent of women aged 45 and over were exercising more than ever before.

One in five feel they have reached their optimal health, with more than half concerned about becoming weaker and losing mobility.

That’s what motivated Currumbin resident Sophie Kallend, 47, to get fit.

“I see lots of elderly people and they can’t even carry shopping bags,” she said. “I want to be that person who can help everyone in my 60s because I’m still strong.”

Ms Kallend completed a certificate in fitness through Kingscliff Tafe where she was the oldest – and often the fittest – student.

“We had to run an oval and track our time, but after two minutes they died and I ended up winning,” Ms Kallend said. She has climbed Mt Warning twice in one day – something she says she could not have done in her 20s.
