People may enjoy feeding wildlife but there are many reasons not to. They include changing the wildlife’s natural behaviour, the risk of injury to wildlife and people and the risk of disease.
Bread, for instance, can ferment in a bird’s stomach and then cause a build-up of acid leading to digestive problems.
When fed to kangaroos and wallabies, bread can cause conditions such as “lumpy jaw” which leads to eventual starvation. Wildlife are also lactose intolerant and cannot be given cows milk. Uneaten food can have environmental impacts.
As a wildlife rescuer I rescue sick wildlife (many needing to be euthanised) after human food has been fed to them.
Wildcare Australia (www.wild care.org.au) can provide further information.
NINA HARDIE, GOLD COAST WE are a city on the brink of the biggest transformation of its life.
The Gold Coast is growing up, business is diversifying and we’re increasingly seen as a great proposition for new and emerging industries. Our health and education sectors are expanding at a great rate and offer so much potential. We are growing up.
But our council and key bureaucrats are acting like spoilt and immature children who are using the city and its reputation as a pawn in a game that’s all about ego.
To grow as a city we need a council with measured leadership.
I implore industry influencers and residents to put pressure on our local government to ‘grow up’.
The Commonwealth Games is just around the corner – don’t stuff up the biggest opportunity we have to show off on the world stage.
