PM tram thumbs-up Turnbull backs southern light rail but no cash yet
PRIME Minister Malcolm Turnbull used a rare visit to the Gold Coast to hold discussions on the southward extension of the light rail system, describing the plan as “worthwhile”.
However he did not commit the Federal Government to funding the project.
Mr Turnbull visited the city on Saturday to inspect several 2018 Commonwealth Games venues.
“We’ve just been talking about the possible extension of the light rail south of Broadbeach, that would be a very worthwhile extension,” the Prime Minister said.
“I think it’s a great project but of course we’ll consider any applications in the usual way.
“I’m very enthusiastic about light rail generally, but particularly here on the Gold Coast.
“I think it’s been a huge success. (I’ve been told) it’s running way ahead of expectations in terms of patronage.”
In 2015 Mr Turnbull announced Federal Government funding for stage two of the light rail to Helensvale in one of his first acts after becoming PM.
Questioned about the possibility of moving Tourism Australia offices to the Gold Coast as part of his government’s move to decentralise the public service, Mr Turnbull said the Games were an “enormous opportunity” for tourism on the Gold Coast.
Tourism Minister Steven Ciobo said while he was passionate about the city, he was not willing to engage in a “frolic” that would cost taxpayers money without an appropriate outcome.
“I’ve indicated now for a number of months that I will look at that (moving Tourism Australia to the Gold Coast), I will do it as part of a considered, methodical approach to take into account the pros and cons and then make a decision accordingly,” he said.
