Late own goal costly for Surfers

- TERRY WILSON

A GUT-wrenching own goal right at the death has cost Surfers Paradise full points in a pulsating Gold Coast Premier League clash against Gold Coast Knights.

Up against the ladder-leading Knights at the Croatian Sports Centre on Saturday, Surfers led heading into added time when an unfortunate error at the back led to a 2-2 draw.

The unwitting provider of the equalising goal was Japanese full-back Ryu Yonezawa, whose desperate slide at the ball resulted in it going into the net.

Chris Broadfoot had earlier scored for the Knights but Burcin Yorulmaz (penalty) and Brandon Gomez put the Apollo in front.

“We were going to score that late goal anyway,” Knights coach Alex Morrison said.

“Daniel Dragicevic sent in a good ball and Teddy Watson was about to tap it in.”

In a strange weekend of results, Broadbeach United missed a golden opportunity to get to within a point of the Knights when they shared a goalless draw with Magic United at Nikiforides Park.

Similarly, the result was the same at Jim Devine Field in Murwillumbah where the Warning shared the spoils with Palm Beach.

Making it five teams that did not find the net were the Coomera Colts, who lost 3-0 to Burleigh Heads at Viney Park.

Burleigh slipped into fourth spot after goals from Eric Middleton, Hayden Sumner and Luke Roiter, taking fourth spot from Palm Beach.

Adding to the weekend intrigue is the fact that the Knights and Broadbeach had their first draws of the season.
