BOMBING BURLEIGH

Guest coaching role ends in defeat for Aussie rules legend

- TERRY WILSON terry.wilson@news.com.au

NOT even the knowledge and tactical nous of an AFL legend was enough to land Burleigh a win when Kevin Sheedy coached the Bombers over the weekend.

The Essendon legend and foundation coach of the GWS Giants was guest coach of the Bombers for a QFA Division 1 match – the third tier of state footy – against Caloundra at Bill Godfrey Oval.

Caloundra took the match by 18.21 (129) to 12.9 (81) and Sheedy said he had a ball back at grassroots level despite the loss.

“I tell everybody I just coached the first quarter,” Sheedy joked of a quartertime scoreline of 5.4 to 4.2 Burleigh’s way.

“Seriously it was a really enjoyable day and the club was packed after the game.”

Sheedy spent yesterday at Sun Stud near Beaudesert looking over stallion Bel Esprit, the sire of champion mare Black Caviar. Sheedy is a part-owned of Bel Esprit.

Meanwhile in the QAFL, Palm Beach-Currumbin slumped to their third loss in a

row when beaten 15.10 (100) to 10.9 (69) by Mt Gravatt at Dittmer Park.

The Lions trailed 1.2 to 6.3 at quarter-time and never threatened thereafter. The result mans the Lions have not won since inspirational skipper Jesse Derrick left for an overseas honeymoon.

SHEEDY ON HIS COACHING RETURN

Derrick is expected back next round.

Premiers Labrador were given a fright by Surfers Paradise at Cooke-Murphy Oval.

Surfers led by a point at quarter-time but never recovered after Labrador put on 4.5 to 1.1 in the second term.

Ex-AFL star Barry Hall kicked four for the Tigers and Wayde Mills was best on ground again, just ahead of centreman Billy Hicks and skipper Bryce Retzlaff.

For Surfers Jack Taylor, Kain Ford and Southport-listed Matt Doran were the standouts.

SERIOUSLY IT WAS A REALLY ENJOYABLE DAY AND THE CLUB WAS PACKED AFTER THE GAME
