GOLD COAST BULLETIN Tuesday, April 1, 1986

THE tragic death of a 21-monthold girl took the Gold Coast Easter toll to four.

Three others were still fighting for their lives in hospital and scores more were not so seriously injured.

Police described the Easter holidays as having been tragic on the roads.

Brisbane traffic branch Superintendent Cal Farrah said many of the accidents were due to “driver irresponsibility”.

Supt Farrah, who headed the Easter Operation Light Four road blitz, said six people had died on the State’s roads.

He said police officers were “terribly disappointed by the high road toll.

“There were enough police on the roads but much of the problem is due to driver irresponsibility,” Supt Farrah said.

Nerang police officer Sergeant Len Reynolds described the death of a small girl at Clagiraba as “tragic”.

The girl, whose name was withheld by police, was run over when her father backed the car down the driveway of their Clagiraba Drive house, near the Crayfish Farm, about 2.15pm.

She suffered serious injuries and was dead before ambulance officers could rush her to the Gold Coast Hospital.

The little girl’s death was not included in the Easter road toll because it had occurred on private property.

The horrific death count started the previous Thursday when a car ran off the Hope Island Road into a power pole killing two men.

Darryl Wayne Lindsay, 17, of Miami and the driver Anthony James Jeffries, 19, of Hamilton were the victims.
