SPINNING WILDLY

- CONNOR O’SULLIVAN AND SASHA MACLEOD

This year’s must-have toy has plenty of devoted fans along with those who can’t understand what the fuss is all about St Francis Xavier School Year 6

UNLESS you’ve been hiding under a rock for the past few months, you’ve probably heard about fidget spinners.

The popular toy, which consists of three blades with a

bearing at its centre enabling it to spin continuously, has taken 2017 by storm.

We asked two St Francis Xavier students to debate the pros and cons of the trend.

Connor says:

These days, fidget spinners are what you might call the “trend”. Everyone loves them and everyone has one but does anyone realise how worthless they actually are?

Firstly, fidget spinners are a waste of money. Some cost up to $25 – and they’re just pieces of plastic with a bit of metal through the middle.

Students get so distracted in class spinning these pieces of junk, leaving them with no work done. Plus, it’s so annoying when people play with them while you are trying to have a conversation.

Spinners are even potentially dangerous. Kids are flicking and throwing spinners all over the place and it is practically a recipe for disaster.

So ask yourself, are fidget spinners good for learning or are they just one of the most distracting toys ever invented?

Sasha says:

Fidget spinners are now one of the most popular things in society. Spinners are used for people with ADHD so they can fidget and concentrate.

But now people have been collecting them and playing with them just for fun.

Personally, I think fidget spinners are great because they are fun to play with and good for when you get annoyed.

Most people use them for amusing themselves.

They are also good because they can fill time when you are waiting for something. And they’re addictive!

I can’t tell you how many times I’ve ended up playing with my spinner for up to 20 minutes when I only intended on having a quick fidget.

Overall, I think they are reasonably priced, fun to play with and great for all ages.

?? ?? This has been the year of the fidget spinner, with the ubiquitous toy turning up everywhere to the pleasure of many and the annoyance of others.
