“Release” is a monumental sculpture created by South African artist Marco Cianfanelli to mark the location where Mandela was captured and arrested in 1962. The sculpture comprises 50 steel columns that are between six and 9.5 metres in height and covers a width of almost 30 metres. The monument is situated at the end of a winding path, which represents the long walk to freedom that Mandela took towards his goal of political equality.
