Doohan takes on daredevil

- SUZANNE SIMONOT

GOLD Coast motorcycle ace Mick Doohan will return to competitive racing for a oneoff showdown with daredevil Robbie Maddison when Monster Jam returns to Brisbane.

The five-time Grand Prix motorcycle world champ will face off against stunt rider extraordinaire Maddison in the Australian premiere of the Race Of Champions (ROC) series when Monster Jam opens its four-show national tour at Queensland Sports and Athletic Centre on October 7.

Doohan said the tour opener promised to be one of the best stadium events on this year’s motorsport calendar.

“Two too many wheels but I’ve always had a soft spot for car racing,” he said.

“I’ve been privileged to drive in the Race Of Champions over the years. It is always a challenge for an old bike racer and this event will be no different.”

The ROC series pits two and four-wheel motorsport stars against each other in identical, official ROC cars perfectly suited to flying around twisty layouts.

The cars can go from 1-100kph in 2.9 seconds and reach a top speed of 190kmh regardless of track conditions.

No stranger to four wheels, Doohan made the ROC Legends semi-finals on debut in 2009 and went on to compete at events in Beijing, Dusseldorf, Bangkok and Barbados.

“Any chance I have to compete on four wheels I normally take it – often not with great results – but I do enjoy the experience of competing in a different discipline,” he said.
