Biker’s body in ditch

- NICHOLAS MCELROY nicholas.mcelroy@news.com.au

A MOTORCYCLE rider who died after crashing off Tallebudgera Creek Road yesterday may have been laying in a ditch out of sight while children waited for their school bus, according to local residents.

Police believe the 51-yearold man came off the road near Gibson St and landed in a drainage ditch at about 6.30am, heading out of the valley on his way to work.

Residents and a local bus driver said a school bus usually picks up schoolchildren from the roadside at 7.20am, just above where the Tallebudgera Valley man crashed.

“The bus stops there, the kids must have been standing above his body,” said a resident who did not wish to be named.

“I’m racking my brain to why no one saw him there.

“I always check that corner when I drive past and I didn’t see anything at 8.30am or when I drove back past at 10.20am.”

Another resident who was home all day said they did not realise there had been a crash until 11.20am when emergency services arrived. The man was pronounced dead at the scene.

“They checked his motorcycle and his body and they were both cold,” said one resident, stating the man had been there for a number of hours.

Another resident claimed there had been four crashes at the sweeping corner in recent years.

“This is the fourth accident I’ve seen and it’s the first fatal crash, this is a hooning area but it’s died down recently,” they said. “But we all drive through this area too fast because we know the roads so well.”

Police are appealing to any witnesses and motorists who travelled in the area yesterday with dashcam footage.

The Forensic Crash Unit is investigating.
