Wedding crashes any hopes of Stix win

- TERRY WILSON

PAN American Cup hockey tournament-bound Adam Imer jokingly suggests he owes his Labrador Tigerstix teammates a beer or two.

Imer, who represented Brazil in last year’s Rio de Janeiro Olympic Games, was married last weekend and a number of Labrador players, including coach Simon Martin, attended the nuptials.

On top of five Tigerstix players away with Queensland under-21 duties, Labrador were 10 players down when they were thrashed 11-1 by Bulimba on their Keith Hunt Park turf last weekend.

It was the worst defeat Labrador have ever suffered.

“I guess I probably owe them a couple of cold ones,” Imer said of his part in the weekend player exodus.

The loss to Bulimba was the heaviest in the history of Labrador in the Brisbane Hockey League and dropped them to third on standings.

Apart from Imer, who leaves today to prepare for Brazil’s campaign in the Pan American Cup in Pennsylvania next month, and Kookaburra squad member Dylan Wotherspoon, Labrador will be near to full strength tomorrow when they play Pine Rivers-St Andrews in Brisbane.

The game will mark the 150th BHL appearance for the Tigerstix’s former Kookaburras member Jason Wilson, who started his career with Bulimba.

Imer said Wilson, who was player-coach of Labrador in 2015, had been great for the club.

“He is obviously someone who can find the back of the net and he brings experience up front,” Imer said.
