Savanna Amour lines up rich target

- NATHAN EXELBY

QUEENSLAND’S first foray into the Melbourne spring carnival this year will begin with dual Group winner Savanna Amour’s tilt on the Bletchingly Stakes at Caulfield on Saturday.

Already a Group 2 winner of the Armanasco Stakes at Caulfield, the John Meaghertrained Savanna Amour has not been seen since winning the Group 3 Gold Coast Guineas in May.

Syndicator Grant Morgan made the call to spell the filly and aim at the Memsie Stakes in September, rather than press on into the Queensland carnival, where he feared the filly would not handle the Eagle Farm track.

“When we picked out the Memsie as her target it was worth $500,000 and then they boosted it to $1 million, so hopefully that can prove fortuitous for us,” said Morgan, of Ontrack Thoroughbreds.

“The Memsie will be her grand final and we’re hoping a lot of her rivals won’t be as wound up, given they will have other targets later in the spring.

“She’s been wrapped in cotton wool since her Gold Coast win and I think she has improved physically and mentally.”

Meagher sent Savanna Amour to Victoria last Friday where she is being stabled with Pat Carey.

Golden Slipper-winning rider Ben Melham has been booked for the Bletchingly ride.

Savanna Amour’s stablemate Cruising Speed earned valuable black type with her second to Crack Me Up in the Tattersall’s Mile at Doomben on Saturday.
