Lynn to have a bash at surgery
QUEENSLANDER Chris Lynn has had enough of being cricket’s one-armed warrior and will today have surgery that will rule him out until summer’s Big Bash.
The Twenty20 master blaster will sacrifice T20 contracts in the West Indian and Bangladesh premier leagues to head to the operating table in Melbourne.
An MRI on Lynn’s aching left shoulder revealed three forms of tears, one to his rotator cuff similar to that suffered by State of Origin star Johnathan Thurston who also underwent surgery.
Lynn will today visit Dr Greg Hoy, who consults for most of Australia’s top cricketers, and is expected to undergo surgery a few hours later.
“I have been battling through each tournament and umming and ahhing at training but the time has come to get it done,’’ Lynn said.
“I was getting sorer and sorer after training.
‘‘I am pretty confident I will be back for the Big Bash.
“I was supposed to play in the Caribbean Premier League on Wednesday so I have had to give them the bad news.
“I will cost myself a bit but physically and mentally it will mean a lot to get it done.
“They are pretty confident they can get it right but there is obviously no certainty.
“If you hurt something once, you are never going to be 100 per cent but I would like to be somewhere near 100 per cent. Right now it is about 50 per cent and declining. If I can get it up to around 90 per cent I would be real happy with that.
“It is so frustrating. You get a roll on but it ends up being two steps forward and three steps back.
“It is a big decision but the right decision.’’
Lynn has been battling shoulder injuries for the past three years yet, remarkably, has been able to produce some of the shortest game’s greatest moments including a 124m six at the Gabba, which landed in the practice nets.
The mind boggles at what he might be capable of at full fitness.
Lynn spoke with Thurston after the State of Origin rugby league series and they discussed their frustration.
“They are very similar injuries and even though he is playing a different sport to what I am, you still need to be able to get your arm up over your head,’’ Lynn said.
