Ebden makes maiden final

MATTHEW Ebden reached his first ATP Tour singles final, with the Australian qualifier to play American John Isner in the title match at the Hall of Fame Open in Newport.

Isner beat compatriot Bjorn Fratangelo 6-2, 6-4, while world No. 249 Ebden beat Peter Gojowczyck 6-3, 6-3 to reach the overnight final.

The 29-year-old Ebden has won four doubles titles on tour but this is his best run in a singles tournament.

Isner and Ebden were facing off for the third time.
