BIRTHDAY GIRL BINDI TURNS 19

- CHLOE LYONS

IT WAS a wilder day than usual at Australia Zoo yesterday as Bindi Irwin celebrated turning 19.

Bindi welcomed her last year as a teenager with a star-studded, dance-themed, pink-carpet event flanked by her family and long-term boyfriend Chandler Powell.

The former Dancing with the Stars winner expertly worked the hundreds-strong crowd that turned out to celebrate, snapping selfies with excited children and adults alike.

Notable guests included former Brisbane Lions player Dan Merrett, The Voice star Darren Percival and her late dad Steve Irwin’s best friend, Wes Mannion.

The Irwin children’s elaborate parties have become a tradition on the Sunshine Coast and are typically the zoo’s biggest days of the year, with parents taking advantage of free entry for children under 14.

In a heartfelt message to his sister, Robert Irwin told the crowd just how much she meant to him. “We’re all so proud of Bindi,” he said. She is the greatest sister.”
