5 OF SUPER THE BOWLS BEST

-

These five eateries give super bowl a new meaning and they’re all scoring a touchdown, writes Sally Coates

BIBIMBAP BOWL STONES THROW 1823 GOLD COAST HWY, BURLEIGH HEADS

Experience a taste of Korea just a hop, skip and a jump away from Burleigh Headland with Stones Throw’s new bibimbap bowl. This bowl is a healthier take on the traditional rice bowl, with crunchy brown rice instead of the traditional sticky white variety, loaded up with fermented and pickled vegetables, including carrot, wombok, cabbage and house-made fennel kimchi. It’s served with a crispy-edge fried egg on top and can be made with or without braised beef.

POKE BOWL BSKT 4 LAVARACK RD, MERMAID BEACH

The BSKT poke bowl is a combination of fresh Tasmanian salmon, pickled ginger, zucchini noodles, avocado, edamame and organic brown rice with spicy sesame soy. BSKT director Selasi Berdie says it reflects their wholefoods approach. “The poke trend came at a good time because we use a lot of raw, fresh and organic ingredients in our food anyway. It’s now one of our most popular dishes.”

SPOODLE BOWL CAFFE REPUBLIC 1/138-162 SLATYER AVE, BUNDALL

At this Bundall healthy food eatery, even the bowl is edible and good for you. “We’ve made the bowl out of sweet potato noodles and fried it into a bowl shape, so it’s nice and crunchy,” owner Peter Dufty says. “Then it’s filled with a quinoa and nori salad, cucumber salad, avocado with olive and lime oil and house-smoked ocean trout, then topped with a poached egg and some chilli.”

BUDDHA BOWL CARDAMOM POD 3/3 BROLGA AVENUE, SOUTHPORT

If you think veggies won’t fill you up, we challenge you to take on Cardamom Pod’s Buddha Nourish Bowl. As is the case with everything at the Pod, the dish is plant based and contains a huge variety of beautifully prepared and arranged ingredients – basmati rice, baby spinach, roasted sweet potato, sprouts, cucumber, saute broccoli, carrot hummus, peanut sauce and marinated tofu or falafel.

BURRITO BOWL CALIFORNIA TACOS 1718 GOLD COAST HWY, BURLEIGH HEADS

Taking the contents of a burrito out of the tortilla creates a totally different meal, and when the ingredients are as fresh and authentic as they are at Burleigh’s California Tacos it feels a lot less naughty. Their signature bowl is a mix of citrus lime rice, black beans, cheese, cabbage, salsa verde, salsa fresca and baja aioli served with corn chips and salsa.
