SWAN LAKE RESCUE BID FAILS

-

A MOTION to stop the filling of Black Swan Lake has failed with only two councillors voting in favour of saving the water body.

Before the Gold Coast City Council meeting yesterday about 20 people protested the decision but it did not sway the vote.

Nerang councillor Peter Young moved to get legal advice to find out if the Gold Coast Turf Club’s development application was filed correctly. The council voted last November to have the lake turned into a park which would be used as an overflow car park during large events.

Southport councillor Dawn Crichlow said the area was classed as an equine precinct and the lake should be filled. “We have so many parks,” she said. “Are we going to say we don’t want these events?”

Cr Young and councillor Daphne McDonald were the only two councillors to vote to save the lake.

Protest organiser Sally Spain called the decision “moronic”. “Do not fill a wildlife habitat with currently a nesting swan on it,” she said. “Do not fill it for a car park.”
