SURFERS EATERY GIVING A REAL TASTE OF BROOKLYN CUISINE

- SALLY COATES

A GOLD Coast restaurant’s quest for niche American cuisine took a lot of taste testing.

Michael Rose, co-owner of Brooklyn Depot Kitchen and Brew in Surfers Paradise, visited dozens of venues while on a research trip to the US to help mould his own menu.

“We visited over 100 venues including rooftop bars, food trucks, fine dining restaurants and old classic diners,” Mr Rose said.

“We set out to capture the authenticity of Brooklyn cuisine by offering a selection that represents the diverse backgrounds and cultures that influence the Brooklyn food set. It was the ultimate research mission to explore the best of Brooklyn and bring it home.”

The menu includes items authentic to Brooklyn and new to the Gold Coast, including lobster mac and cheese, shrimp and grits tacos, french dip sandwich, cheeseburger empanadas, chicken n’ waffles, french toast grilled cheese, lobster rolls and corned beef hash egg rolls.

“Over the past two years burgers have exploded, there are so many incredible options to try,” Mr Rose said.

“We are in awe of some of the creations available. It’s fantastic to now have so many great choices.

“It was the quality of the market that inspired us to raise the bar on what we were doing.”
