Free trade booze boost
BORIS Johnson reckons the “cruel deprivation” of the Australian people from tariffs on imported Scotch whisky could end under a free trade deal.
In a jovial press conference in Sydney, the British Foreign Secretary backed up his case for Aussies to get cheaper whisky by noting Bundaberg Rum didn’t attract the same import duties in the UK.
Asked by a British journalist whether Australian wine would be cheaper under a future free trade deal, Mr Johnson said “never mind Australian wine, which is, of course, delicious.
“There are tariffs on Scotch whisky in this country which seem to me to be a cruel deprivation of the Australian people of Scotch whisky at the price they could have it,” Mr Johnson said.
